Job Description

We are seeking a mature, passionate individual with a profound love for the outdoors, particularly paddling, and extensive experience working with school-aged children who is an excellent communicator and an adaptable problem solver. As the Outdoor Summer Camp Director, you will lead an active, youth-led camp program set in a natural environment. This is a full-time role from the last week of June to the third week of August, with part-time involvement in the spring to prepare for staff training as well as camp set up and fall to wrap up the camp season and provide a comprehensive camp report to the board of directors. The role focuses on fostering an inclusive camp culture, overseeing day-to-day operations, managing a team of 10 to 12 staff members, and serving as the primary point of contact for parents Camp Leadership and Vision: Develop and execute an inclusive camp environment centered around outdoor activities, particularly paddling, catering to diverse groups of school-aged children. Day-to-Day Operations: Oversee all camp operations, ensuring safety and adherence to policies regarding the Club’s safety regulations and Code of Conduct and helps to facilitate a rich, engaging experience for campers. Youth-Led Programming: Encourage and support a youth-led camp approach, empowering campers to take ownership of their experiences while fostering leadership and teamwork. Staff Management: Supervise and support a team of 10 to 12 staff members, providing guidance, training, evaluations, and feedback as necessary. Parental Engagement: Act as the primary point of contact for parents/guardians, addressing inquiries and ensuring open communication channels for feedback and concerns. Morning Sign-In and Afternoon Sign-Out: Maintain a visible presence during daily morning sign-ins and afternoon sign-outs, interacting with campers, staff, and parents, able to perform and oversee opening and closing procedures. Staff Training: Plan and assist in delivering comprehensive staff training sessions before the camp season starts. Performance Management: Provide employee feedback and manage performance as needed throughout the camp season. End-of-Season Staff Reviews: Compile comprehensive end-of-season staff reviews to evaluate performance and aid in future hiring and staff training. Administrative Tasks: Manage basic administrative duties, including handling parent inquiries and ensuring all necessary paperwork is complete and up to date. Requirements: Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially in engaging with parents and diverse groups of children, bilingual in both french and english Experience: Proven experience in outdoor education, particularly with paddling activities, and working with school-aged children in a leadership role within a camp environment. Passion for Paddling and Outdoors: Deep enthusiasm for paddling activities and a love for the outdoors that can be instilled in campers and staff. Leadership Skills: Strong leadership abilities to inspire, guide, and empower both campers and staff members. Is a positive role model who sets a tone for a respectful, co-operative, and fun environment for working and learning. Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, schedules, and responsibilities efficiently. Administrative Proficiency: Competency in handling administrative tasks and documentation. Certifications: Standard First Aid and CPR “C”, posses Pleasure Craft Operator’sCertification prior to program starting Completes a training on the Club’s Safety protocols and emergency procedures.
