Job Description for Power Plant Operator Operate, monitor, and maintain generators, switchgear controls, motor control centers, and equipment associated with mechanical systems used to monitor and distribute electricity. The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. They provide a representative summary of major duties and responsibilities. Incumbents may not be required to perform all listed duties and may be assigned additional, position-specific tasks. Monitor and maintain oil and fluid levels of power plant equipment according to standard Department procedures and Borough policy. Adjust water temperatures and pressures as necessary. Operate and maintain stationary engines, generator sets, and related mechanical equipment and facilities. Maintain generator cooling systems, including mixing and testing for recommended levels. Change oil, fuel, and air filters. Keep a daily log of equipment performance, power output, generator operations, and outages. Assist Lead Power Plant Operator and Village Services Supervisor with inventory management, including requesting, receiving, and storing supplies and equipment. Inspect and clean equipment and facilities; report maintenance needs and deficiencies. Comply with all safety rules and regulations and attend scheduled safety meetings. Respond to alarms and power failures, reporting issues to supervisors. Work a non-traditional schedule, including evenings, holidays, weekends, and be available for 24-hour on-call duties. Perform other assigned duties. Qualifications include knowledge of North Slope Borough organization, operations, policies, and procedures, and a high school diploma or G.E.D., or a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
