Job Description

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Chief Administrator of Operations for the Secretary of Natural Resources, participates in the development of both short and long-range wildlife management goals, research projects, and controlled hunts. Responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the successful completion of assigned projects within predetermined guidelines. Must be familiar with the principles and procedures of wildlife management and research. Will have extensive contact with a variety of public individuals and groups. Responsible for implementing wildlife programs for tribal members. Conduct audio and visual wildlife surveys, day/night. May be required to plant food plots, mow, build/repair fences, road maintenance, and control or eliminate nuisance species.

Job Duties:

Assist in supervision and management of hunting seasons and controlled hunts as directed. Participate in planning, development, coordination, and implementation of wildlife research, and management projects. Assist in establishing project goals and participate in the development of Secretary of Natural Resources objectives. Plan and organize educational events centered around outdoor recreation. Interpret policies to subordinates and the interested public. Develop or implement existing procedures for accomplishing assigned projects. Assist with the development of management or research plans which include the definition of proposed projects, specifications, time schedules, expenses, equipment, supplies, and personnel needed to complete the projects. Establish liaison and work closely with intergovernmental agencies. Assist in conducting public hearings on regulations and other Department actions. Present programs to local civic, educational, youth, professional, sportsmen, and environmental groups. Review professional wildlife management literature to stay abreast of advances in the professional wildlife management field. Conduct surveys of assigned species of wildlife and hunter success surveys on assigned species of wildlife. Conduct habitat surveys to evaluate grazing or browsing pressure, habitat quality, and potential for production of various wildlife species. Make recommendations on management and other non-wildlife uses. Assists in the development of programs to provide better hunting and fishing to citizens on tribal land. Promote hunting and fishing opportunities to citizens. Organize and supervise guided hunts with youth, elders, veterans, and other tribal citizens. Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises two (2) to three (3) full-time employees and one (1) part-time employee in the Wildlife Conservation Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

Bachelors degree from a 4-year college or university in Wildlife Management or a Conservation related field is preferred; or six (6) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

An additional four (4) years of experience in a related field.

COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual should know Database software, Human Resources systems, Internet software, Inventory software, Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid drivers license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. Must be able to pass an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety course within six (6) months of employment.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
