Description The Town of Nantucket, IT Department is hiring the Information Technology Security Systems Intern. Hourly rate $24.
STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Information Technology Security Systems Intern will assist the Chief Technology Officer & IT Security Systems Administrator in securing and protecting the Town of Nantucket's systems and data. The intern will participate in various tasks related to cybersecurity, including monitoring network activity, assisting with cybersecurity awareness training, and supporting the implementation of security best practices. This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in information security within a municipal government setting.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Under the supervision of the Chief Technology Officer & Information Technology Security Systems Administrator, the intern will receive specific instructions and guidance. Work will be reviewed for accuracy, progress, and conformance with established procedures.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.
CONFIDENTIALITY:
The intern may have access to confidential information and is expected to adhere to all policies and guidelines regarding data privacy and security.
Essential duties/ responsibilities/ functions - Assist in monitoring and analyzing log files and network traffic for suspicious activity.
- Support the identification of potential threats and help define measures to mitigate risks.
- Help update documentation related to security policies, disaster recovery protocols, and incident response plans.
- Participate in vulnerability and penetration testing under supervision and assist with related reporting.
- Assist in researching emerging cybersecurity trends, threats, and vulnerabilities.
- Aid in the delivery of cybersecurity awareness training for Town employees.
- Help maintain and update security configurations for systems, including firewalls, antivirus, and endpoint applications.
- Support the IT team with general tasks, such as monitoring backups and performing system updates.
- Utilize help desk software to log, track, and resolve support requests in a timely manner.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required minimum qualifications Education and Experience:
Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of a degree program in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related field. Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles and interest in pursuing a career in IT security.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Basic knowledge of network and system security concepts.
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve technical issues.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work well within a team environment.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite and basic IT tools.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment is typical of an office setting, with occasional need to respond to cybersecurity incidents. The intern may be required to work beyond normal business hours to assist in emergencies or critical projects.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to sit for extended periods and use a computer.
- Occasionally lift and move items up to 30 lbs.
