Overview Established in 1744, West Nottingham Academy is the oldest boarding school in the United States. We are a 9-12 grade coeducational boarding and day school located in Maryland near the picturesque Chesapeake Bay, an hour’s drive from either Philadelphia or Baltimore. Our mission is to inspire and educate students to become socially aware leaders and innovators, who positively impact their communities around the world. We are looking for an innovative, creative writing, literature, and critical thinking teacher who is great at building relationships. Our goal is to graduate great human beings from our school, now in its 4th century of education. Duties Teach six English courses focusing on literature, creative writing, and advanced language arts topics. Incorporate creative curriculum strategies to develop student interest and enhance skills in reading, writing, and critical analysis. Utilize AI-powered educational tools, such as adaptive learning platforms and generative AI, to personalize instruction and enhance engagement. Foster critical thinking skills and guide ethical discussions around literature and its connection to contemporary issues. Design lessons with a focus on student-centered, project-based learning to encourage creativity, analysis, and collaboration. Serve as an advisor to up to five students, supporting their academic and personal development. Attend departmental and faculty meetings, as well as all school events. Coach/Assist two seasons of after-school sports and/or activities. Participate in duty team responsibilities, including one weekend every four to five weeks and one night during the school week. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field (Master’s preferred). At least three years of teaching experience in upper-level English or related courses preferred. Experience with boarding schools is an asset. Familiarity with AI-powered educational tools and the ability to integrate them into lesson planning and classroom practices. Strong ability to connect literature and writing skills to real-world, contemporary relevance. Proven ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues to build community and support student learning. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Former high school/college athlete preferred. Energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity—a willingness to learn alongside students. Proven ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and work independently. A high degree of cultural competency and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Demonstrated ability to stay current with emerging educational technologies and integrate them effectively into classroom practices.
