You will establish design goals and values for specific market sectors or disciplines, supporting the firm’s philosophy and principles. As a Design Director, you will be accountable for maintaining quality, consistency, and innovation within your focus area, fostering a positive creative culture across studios and with clients. What You’ll Do Coordinate with Office Design Leaders to ensure high-quality design outputs, achieving HNTB's 4 for 4 standards. Promote a culture of design excellence through regular project reviews. Lead the development and activities of the National Design Committee. Engage with academia and professional societies to foster thought leadership. Represent HNTB at national and international levels within professional communities. Support hiring, supervision, and development of design staff. Contribute to pursuit strategies for large-scale projects. Perform other duties as assigned. What You’ll Need Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Planning, with 15 years of progressive experience, preferably in a large, multi-discipline firm. At least 10 years experience in designing complex projects. Essential Functions Support and uphold the firm’s design philosophy and values. Ensure high-quality design delivery aligned with firm standards. Lead design reviews and foster a creative environment. Participate in the National Design Council for firm-wide strategies. Maintain relationships with academic and industry partners. Oversee investment in design research, technology, and marketing. Represent the firm at industry events to enhance its reputation. Mentor and supervise design staff to attract and retain talent. Work with business development to align strategies and maximize reputation. Drive recruitment focusing on artistic and technical skills. Ensure visual and physical branding integration. Provide strategic oversight on large projects, including vision and team management. Ensure proper design oversight in pursuits and active projects. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in Architecture or related field. 20+ years of experience, including leadership roles. Professional registration (AIA, NCARB, etc.). Industry recognition and a strong professional network. Competencies Proven success in major project design. Exceptional leadership and mentorship skills. Strong client management and strategic thinking. Ability to align design culture with firm goals. Diplomatic storytelling skills for client engagement. Travel requirements: 25%-50% as needed. Work environment: Primarily office-based with occasional site visits and meetings.
