Construction Hands On Trainer - YouthBuild Houston, TX 77004
Salary/Hourly: $50,000 / $24.04
The Construction Trainer will provide on-site training and supervision to program participants in the construction of affordable housing and related projects. This role combines hands-on building with instruction, mentorship, and safety oversight to ensure that young adults gain marketable construction skills while contributing to meaningful community projects.
We are seeking a Construction Hands On Trainer to work closely with the Construction Trainer to train and certify program participants in the Nation Center for Construction and Education Research Curriculum and to teach construction skills. The Construction Hands On Trainer will supervise the participants in the classroom and on the approved worksite. They will teach youth the skills necessary to gut, rehabilitation or construction of a house or an apartment building and advanced carpentry skills. The Construction Hands On Trainer will also assist with supportive guidance and encouragement to the development of the young adults personal and leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities: - Teach construction skills including demolition, framing, interior work, carpentry, etc. and the appropriate use of equipment and tools through demonstrations, modeling skills and supervising utilizing the NCCER curriculum.
- Provide hands-on instruction in basic to advanced construction skills (e.g., carpentry, framing, drywall, roofing, painting, plumbing, electrical basics, and tool usage).
- Teach safe procedures for use and handling of equipment, tools, and clean-up of the construction area through demonstrations, modeling appropriate procedure and supervision.
- Collaborate with program staff to integrate academic learning with construction activities.
- Monitor participants' progress, provide feedback, and document skill development.
- Coordinate with contractors, inspectors, and community partners to ensure projects meet quality and compliance standards.
- Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and materials.
- Serve as a mentor and role model, encouraging teamwork, problem-solving, and professional work habits.
Qualifications: - Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in residential construction or a related trade.
- Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor individuals with varying skill levels.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, tools, and OSHA safety standards.
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents, blueprints, and specifications.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Commitment to working with young adults in a supportive, empowering environment.
Working Conditions: - Primarily on construction sites, with exposure to outdoor weather conditions and manual labor.
- Some evening or weekend hours may be required depending on project needs.
