What You Will Do

The Bioscience Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a postmaster's researcher interested in eukaryotic microbial platforms (microalgae and/or yeast) and their utilization to produce fuels, feed, and chemicals. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists, postdoctoral researchers, technicians and students seeking to develop new bio-based technologies to address the nation's need for petroleum replacements. Specifically, this research will focus on the generation of sustainable aviation fuels and co-products from biomass derived from wastewater remediation processes. Research will identify options for integration of produced algal biomass (or fractions of) into fermentation pathways for fuel production.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Strong technical background in one or more of the following areas: fermentation, microbiology, biomanufacturing, molecular biology.
  • Demonstrated working experience in the field of microbial biomanufacturing, with emphasis in yeast fermentation or large-scale algae cultivation.
  • Ability to independently design, conduct and troubleshoot experiments.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, and willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

Education/Experience: Awarded a master's degree in biology, microbiology, biotechnology or a related STEM field within the past three years but have not yet been accepted into another master's program or a PhD program. All degree requirements by commencement of the appointment.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in process development and scale up.
  • Experience with data analysis applied to biomanufacturing and chemical catalysis/bioconversion problems.
  • Knowledge of molecular/synthetic biology methods and microbial characterization assays ('omics, flow cytometry, microscopy, etc.) or analytical methods for biomass characterization (HLPC, GC, etc.)
  • Experience with analysis of complex microbial communities and their associated physiology.

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500. For more information go to Postdoc Program website at "
