Job Description

The mission of the Children's Museum Houston is to transform communities through innovative, child-centered learning that improves the trajectories of all children in Greater Houston.

For more than four decades, Children's Museum Houston has supported student achievement, empowered parents, and ignited a life-long love of learning. We are consistently rated as one of the top children's museums in the nation. Our programming serves more than 900,000 participants annually at the Museum, at the Fort Bend Children's Discovery Center, and at 270+ outreach locations across Greater Houston. We welcome families with offerings that include 13 exhibits, a performing arts series, a full slate of cultural programming, science activities led by degreed educators, and weekly Free Family Nights.

Job Summary:


We are seeking a detail-oriented and enthusiastic individual fluent in English and Spanish to join our team as a Part-Time Data Collector. The Data Collector will be responsible for conducting surveys and observations and supporting with focus groups and interviews to gather comprehensive feedback on experiences, behaviors, needs and expectations of Museum visitors and beneficiaries of outreach programs. This role plays a vital part in helping us understand and improve our progress towards providing child-centered learning opportunities that improve the trajectories of all children. This role will fluctuate as needed, with up to 29 hours per week. Duties and Responsibilities:
• Administer surveys using tablets, paper forms, or online platforms, ensuring accuracy and completeness of responses.
• Engage with Museum visitors, beneficiaries, and other stakeholders in a friendly and professional manner to encourage participation in surveys and data collection activities.
• Collect and record observational data related to visitor flow, interactions with exhibits, and overall engagement within the Museum.
• Conduct interviews with visitors and outreach program participants to gain deeper insights into their motivations, interests, and feedback.
• Enter survey data collected on paper forms into database or online platforms with accuracy and completeness.
• Concisely document observational findings, focus group discussions, and interview transcripts for insights and trends.
• Maintain confidentiality and integrity of survey responses, observational data, focus group discussions, and interview transcripts.
• Adhere to established ethical guidelines and best practices in data collection and research.
• Compile, clean, and organize collected data in Excel for further analysis.
• Use Excel tools (including pivot tables, charts, and formulas) to summarize and visualize trends in survey and observational data.
• Support the Evaluation Coordinator in preparing statistical summaries and basic reports.
• Other duties as assigned.


Skills and Qualifications:
• Proficiency in English (written and spoken) required.
• Spanish (spoken) is preferred.
• Proficiency in using tablets, smartphones, and other digital devices for data collection.
• Proficiency in using applications, such as Survey Monkey, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, formulas, and chart creation, required.
• Ability to learn and apply basic statistical methods (such as calculating percentages, averages, and cross-tabulations) to support reporting and analysis.


Preferred qualifications:
• College coursework in education, psychology, sociology, anthropology, or a related field is preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences in survey activities, focus groups, and interviews in both languages.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection, record-keeping, and transcription.
• Ability to work independently and follow established protocols and procedures.
• Comfortable working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.


Education:
• High school diploma or equivalent required; applicant must have completed or should be working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Experience:
• Experience working in an educational setting, such as a school, childcare program, library, or similar program, is a plus.
• Previous experience in survey administration, data collection, focus group facilitation, and conducting interviews is a plus.
• Interest in museums, cultural institutions, and visitor experience research. Physical Requirements:
• Able to move around the Museum frequently, sometimes walking or standing for extended periods of time.
• Able to travel using own transportation from the Museum to outreach event sites in the Greater Houston Area.
• Able to carry lightweight objects, lift boxes, and roll carts when needed
